Puncturevine

With the finish of the monsoon rains, we have lots of weeds in the backyard.  This is puncturevine (aka andybane - Andy is our dog and this plant is certainly his bane because its fruits, when they become dried, turn into vicious thumbtack-like weapons that stick into his paws).  Puncturevine, species Tribulus terrestris, is in the same family (Zygophyllaceae) as creosote, which is native to Tucson, AZ and the Sonoran Desert.  However, puncturevine is not native to the Sonoran desert.  Puncturevine has a history of medicinal uses including an aphrodisiac and to increase testosterone levels (however there’s minimal evidence for its medicinal benefit).
