Hawk
Hawk

I found this hawk today, dead. I found it on my morning run next to the road. It’s a Cooper’s Hawk, species Accipiter cooperii. Here’s a picture of its whole body and wing spread out. What struck me was its brilliant red eyes and long sharp talons. I’m not sure how it died. It was close to the road, so it may have been hit by a car. Accipiter cooperii are surprise predators and feed on other birds and small mammals. There’s a wealth of pigeons, cactus wrens and rabbits in our neighborhood in Tucson that would make a perfect meal. They are very adept at weaving and very fast flight through trees and foliage. Earlier this year, we saw one sitting atop a telephone pole plucking feathers from its prey before feasting on it.
